Civil Weddings in Zurich & Switzerland | Why Intimate Weddings Are Truly Special

When people think of a dream wedding, they often imagine a large celebration with over 80 guests, an extravagant venue and a full-scale event. However, what many couples don’t realize is how incredibly beautiful and meaningful a civil wedding in Switzerland can be.

As a wedding photographer, I have had the privilege of capturing many civil weddings in Zurich and across Switzerland, and I can truly say that these intimate celebrations often hold a very special kind of magic. There is something deeply emotional about saying “I do” surrounded only by your closest family and dearest friends.

A civil wedding, also known as a registry office wedding in Switzerland, is often perceived as more formal or administrative. While this may be partly true, many registry offices today offer beautiful settings and even allow space for personal vows or small ceremonial moments, making the experience much more personal and memorable than expected.

In cities like Zurich, Basel or Lucerne, civil ceremonies can take place in stunning locations, combining legal formality with elegant surroundings. After the ceremony, many couples choose to celebrate with an intimate lunch, a refined dinner or a relaxed apéro with their guests, creating a warm and connected atmosphere.

From a photography perspective, civil weddings offer a wonderful opportunity to focus on genuine emotions and meaningful interactions. I often recommend starting the day with a couple shoot and a first look before the ceremony. This allows the couple to fully enjoy their time with their guests afterwards without feeling rushed or needing to step away for photos.

Another important tip is to plan time for family portraits. Since civil weddings are usually attended by the most important people in your life, it is the perfect moment to capture timeless family images. These can beautifully take place right after the ceremony or during the apéro.

One of my personal highlights at every civil wedding in Switzerland is the moment when the couple exits the registry office. Having your guests form a corridor or “guard of honor” creates incredibly emotional and joyful images. These spontaneous reactions, the laughter and the movement make for some of the most memorable photographs of the entire day.

If you are planning a civil wedding in Zurich or anywhere in Switzerland, there are some truly stunning registry office locations to consider. Some of my personal favorites include the registry office in Basel at Rittergasse, the Zunfthaus zur Waag in Zurich, Villa Boveri in Baden, Schloss Meggenhorn in Meggen, the registry office in Lucerne, and even the iconic The Dolder Grand in Zurich, which offers civil ceremonies in its elegant library.

A civil wedding in Switzerland proves that you don’t need a large-scale celebration to create something unforgettable. Sometimes, the most intimate moments, shared with the people who matter most, are the ones that stay with you forever.
